As part of a third year project, I used my interest of football and my local club Ayr United as a base to create an editorial design. The outcome took the form of a match day programme as from experience of attending matches, the clubs programme design is pretty basic and isn't overly visual.
The outcome - I wanted to stay away from the commonly seen large scale imagery that fills the whole cover and can be seen by most other clubs. As part of this, I used Ayr United's distinguishing colour scheme of black and white to visually highlight who the subject matter is. I also wanted to keep it up to date and in line with the modern style through use of bold typography and an illustrative look.
Other pages of the programme were based on my ideas of what fans would like to see as a large majority of other clubs feature match day programmes that are 30 to 40 pages long and end up just featuring pages that fans aren't interested in to fill the pages. Therefore, I used this as an opportunity to put across the kind of information that fans would like to see on a smaller scale. A 10 page programme with the relevant details and at a cheaper cost would mean more to fans than a 40 page booklet filled with adverts and useless content at a high cost.
A well as the programme design, I used this as a chance to contact the club to take my own photography that could feature in the editorial. As a result, I was able to attend a home match as a photographer and gained access to the side of the pitch where I was able to collect some imagery to feature in the programme design. This is just a selection of the photos that I managed to capture.
Throughout the design process, I also created a poster design for potential inclusion, but opted not to include it at the time due to the concept of keeping the overall programme relatable to fans and concise to what is useful. As a result, this design was unused but I still feel it has potential to work alone as a poster of Somerset Park, where Ayr United play.
